Lavinia Marin is one of those artists who doesn’t seek to impress, but to touch. Each of her works is an honest statement, a painted confession where sensitivity, strength, and a deep connection to nature coexist. Now based in Marbella, Spain, Lavinia gave us a warm and open interview about her artistic journey, her sources of inspiration, and the philosophy behind her paintings.
How did your passion for painting begin?
Lavinia Marin: I think it was always there. Since childhood, I felt the urge to draw, to color everything I saw. Nature has always fascinated me – how light changes on a leaf, how the sky looks after rain. As a child, I didn’t know I was making art. I simply felt I couldn’t not do it.
What are the dominant themes in your work?
Nature, femininity, imperfection. I never sought symmetry or the classical idea of “beauty.” For me, a torn petal is more interesting than a perfect rose. I love painting simple things that carry deep energy: a teacup, a flower, a woman’s body in soft light.
Do you have a favorite painting?
Yes, one that isn’t even publicly displayed – a small piece made during a very personal period. It’s not about technique, but about the pure emotion of that time. But generally, “Pink Roses” is very dear to me – it has a special light and reminds me of the freedom I feel when I’m alone in nature.
What inspires you when you paint?
Sometimes a memory. Other times, a mood. Very often, music. I listen to a lot of jazz when I paint – it helps me get into an emotional rhythm. But inspiration also comes from unexpected places – a conversation, an old photograph, even a scent.
How do you want your art to be perceived?
As a pause. A breath. I want those who look at my work to feel calm, maybe even see themselves in it. I don’t want to say, “look how beautifully I paint,” but “look how you can feel through a painting.”
What’s next for you as an artist?
I’m working on a new series inspired by Andalusian landscapes, and I want to organize a solo exhibition here in Marbella. I also dream of collaborating with a lifestyle brand – maybe textiles, maybe ceramics. My art lives beautifully in everyday objects.
